May
2008 Issue
April
showers are apparently gone, leaving a wake of devastation in southeast
Virginia in the form of tornado damage. But with the bad
weather that April brought, I began to notice the major climate
shift reflecting great things for May. The
Club Relaford crew ventured to Charlottesville’s annual event, The Foxfield Races for drinks,
great food, and interesting people. I personally had the opportunity
to converse with the attendees, many of them young adults with
ties to The University of Virginia. Only 2 1⁄2 hours outside
of Washington, D.C. politics couldn’t help but to dominate most
of the conversations.
Conservatives, liberals, moderates, Republicans, Democrats, Libertarians,
you name it; they were there, discussing more than just the thoroughbred
horses. One thing the Foxfield guest had in common is individual style.
Many wore suits and ties, other Polos, and button ups with slacks or
the occasional khaki shorts. The ladies introduced their newly bought
sundresses for the public with bracelets and shades to match.
As the 2008 general elections grow closer, we hark back to past
presidential contests and the clothing accessories that have come
to signify past
candidates. Current candidates have begun making style trends of
their own. From Sen. Barack Obama’s “no tie” look to Sen.
Hillary Clinton’s tailor made suits.
Foxfield also reminded us on the amazing feats that have been accomplished
on the fields of sport. In 18th century France, the biggest political
transformation of that generation was initiated on a tennis court
known as the “Jeu de Paume a Chateau Versailles.”
Young and talented, with a bright future ahead not only best describes
the Foxfield crowd, but also another person making headways in the field
of scholarship. Prince Felipe, the crown prince and heir apparent to
the Spanish throne has all of the qualities listed above and more as
he prepares himself professionally and personally to lead Spain into
the future.
Cheers to a great May,
